“I shall never forget the high spirit of the young men and women with whom I came into contact at your university two years ago. Never have I seen more intelligent life or more keenness to apply their intelligence in a practical way. Your students were eager for knowledge, and they carried that knowledge away with them as they had never done before. They were not satisfied with simple answers;they were always ready to tackle the knotty problems which are the bread of intellectuals. And it was evident that the college gave them an opportunity for free speech,自由讨论和批判性思考,这在他们看来是非常珍贵的。

Their minds were not closed.

(I would rather die than lose my head. I will never be a slave to time and money, but if God grants me these things,I will carry them in the pockets of my coat with all that is dear to my heart) (A free man ought not to have too much of either)等等。
